Die PSP Go! war keine Innovation im Handheld Universum – ließ man doch einfach “nur” das UMD Laufwerk weg, ersetzte dies dadurch, dass man die Games einfach downloaded und verpasste der PSP selbst noch einen schicken Aufklappmechanismus.
Das was daraufhin folgte, erreichte schon den Stand eines Skandals. Viele große Reseller boykottieren den Verkauf der neuen Go!, da kein Umsatz mit den Games gemacht werden kann. Aufgrund dessen verglichen wir die “alte” mit der neuen PSP und kamen zu dem Schluß, dass die “alte” der neuen keineswegs großartig unterlegen ist.
Auch an dem großen Analysten der Videospielebranche, Michael Pachter, ging das nicht vorbei.
I think it is possible and likely that the PSP-4000 will support UMD, and I think that Sony will support whichever formats make it the most money. If the PSPgo fails to latch on as a standard model for the PSP, Sony has no choice but to continue to support the UMD format.
Die nächste PSP müsste also beides vorzugsweise unterstützen.
Without question, there is room for packaged products and the benefits of digital-only are probably more than offset by foregone sales of UMDs. I think that the next version will likely have both, with a disc drive that uses no power if the user is playing a downloaded game. The question is whether it’s too bulky, but my guess is that they can fit some flash in there, or equip the game with a 16Gb memory stick and consumers will be perfectly happy.
Man kann gespannt sein, was Sony sich für die nächste PSP ausdenken wird. Vielleicht wird es ja doch “nur” ein Gaming Handy auf Basis der “alten” PSP (ohne neuen Grafikprozessor etc.). Die PSP Go! lohnt sich bei einem noch größeren Boykott der Reseller auf jeden Fall nicht. Denn nicht alle kaufen Produkte nur über Amazon und Co.
